The Bellevue Hill Arts & Crafts House by Handelsmann + Khaw is a refined restoration and enhancement of a historic residence in Sydney's Bellevue Hill. This project thoughtfully preserves the original Arts and Crafts architectural elements while introducing contemporary design features that complement the home's heritage.
The interior design emphasizes natural materials and craftsmanship, reflecting the Arts and Crafts movement’s principles. The formal dining room, for example, is characterised by abundant natural light, creating an inviting atmosphere.
Chris Cowley, Crafted’s Head of Marketing, notes:
“There’s a quiet shift happening in interiors, away from overly minimal or overtly statement-driven pieces and toward a softer, more grounded elegance. Skirted sofas, pleated details and plush, tonal palettes are coming back into focus. This style, influenced by English country houses, has a modern take and feels especially fresh when paired with contemporary silhouettes and open, light-filled spaces, as seen in this Handelsmann + Khaw project. It’s less about nostalgia and more about creating spaces that feel lived-in, layered and deeply personal.”
Handelsmann + Khaw’s approach marries contemporary aesthetics with timeless design, resulting in a residence that respects its historical context while offering modern comfort and elegance.
